II

(1969)

6 PM SESSION. We won’t tell you why you should love this record. But we will tell you that we’ve got a rare “RL” pressing that was pulled from the shelves by Ahmet Ertegun, and it’s considered by many to be the best sounding version of “II” in existence. At least by anyone that knows anything about anything.

Everything All the Time

(2006)

7:30 PM SESSION. Produced by the band and Phil Ek, Band of Horses debut album became an overnight indie sensation and later took wider music audiences by storm. A Seattle band if ever one existed, the sonic brilliance of this Sub Pop release always pleases. And it reminds us that…we used to work with a bunch of these guys?!? Recorded at Avast! Studios and released March 21, 2006.

Tracy Chapman
Tracy Chapman

Tracy Chapman

(1988)

9 PM SESSION. Elektra Records released Tracy Chapman's debut on April 5, 1988. We've been asked one question as much as any other at Shibuya HiFi: When are you going to play Tracy Chapman? Well, we did last month and the demand was overwhelming. So tonight we'll do it again. And we sincerely hope to see you there.

Dave Brubeck

Time Out

(1959)

6 PM SESSION. We have a six-eye 1st pressing. This record was made so long ago that one of our dad’s actually booked Dave Brubeck to play a concert at the student union. When this record came out it was a hit — Take Five is the highest-selling jazz single of all time — and 65 years later it’s easy to understand why. Produced by Teo Macero and released December 14, 1959 on Columbia Records.

AM

(2013)

7:30 PM SESSION. AM is the fifth studio record by the Arctic Monkeys, and this James Ford-produced effort takes no prisoners. The first time we heard this record in the HiFi Room a guest brought it in for her birthday, and our collective jaws dropped. If you haven't done yourself the favor, listen to this record today. Released by Domino Records on September 9, 2013.

Sound of Silver

(2007)

9 PM SESSION. James Murphy’s punk-infused electronic music makes us want to scream with joy every time we hear it. When Sounds of Silver dropped it was an instant hit with critics and fans alike. The sound is huge (Klipschorns, anyone?) and the production immaculate. This is going to be a phenomenal evening. Join us. Released March 12, 2007, on Capitol and EMI Records.

Donuts
J Dilla

Donuts

(2006)

6 PM SESSION. Dilla has received a ton of love at Shibuya HiFi, but we’ve never given this widely-acclaimed masterpiece it’s proper HiFi Room treatment. The G.O.A.T. accomplished most of this incredible body of work while he was hospitalized with an SP-303 sampler, and it was released only days before his untimely passing. Donuts remains in the pantheon of all time greatest records. There is nothing else like it, because there never was — and still hasn’t been — anyone like J Dilla. Released February 7, 2006, on Stones Throw Records.

Good News For People Who Love Bad News

(2004)

7:30 PM SESSION. On April 6, 2004, Good News For People Who Love Bad News hit the shelves. Modest Mouse were playing two sold out shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco. The atmosphere was electric. Float On was well on its way to becoming an anthem, and the rest of the album was revealed, on that day, to be equally urgent and invigorating. Released on Epic Records.

A Seat At The Table

(2016)

6 PM SESSION. Everyone from Raphael Saadiq to Questlove to Q-Tip chipped in on the production of our favorite Solange album (her third studio effort). The Roy Ayers-inflected keyboards, Quest’s steady kick drum/snare combo, Solange’s angelic lead vocals (and harmonies) make this a go-to album whenever we’re in the mood for a thoughtful and perfect afternoon, or evening. Released September 30, 2016, on Saint Records and Columbia Records.

Marvin Gaye

Trouble Man

(1972)

6 PM SESSION. Marvin Gaye was given full creative control, for the first time in his career, over the soundtrack to the Blaxploitation film Trouble Man. In true Marvin fashion, he pushes boundaries effortlessly, showcasing one of the greatest voices of all time throughout. And the compositions are stunningly beautiful. Released December 8, 1972, on Tamla Records.

In Rainbows
Radiohead

In Rainbows

(2007)

8 PM SESSION SOLD OUT. With In Rainbows Radiohead strove to create a record on par with OK Computer. There was strong sentiment among members that this would be the last record, and that it should be one for the ages. The fact that they achieved the goal is indisputable. Released digitally on October 10, 2007, fans were invited to download and "pay what you like." The physical release hit the streets on December 3, 2007. XL Records pressing. A HiFi Room favorite, for good reason.
