Opal (Mazzy Star)

Happy Nightmare Baby (Rare Press)

(1987)

6 PM SESSION. Released in November 1987 under the SST Records label, Opal's "Happy Nightmare Baby" is a mesmerizing fusion of psychedelic rock, dream pop, and proto-shoegaze that stands out as a unique and influential album of its time. The first pressing of this enigmatic record envelops listeners in a hazy, otherworldly atmosphere with tracks like "Rocket Machine" and "Magick Power," showcasing the haunting vocals of Kendra Smith and the swirling guitar work of David Roback. Kendra quit the band in the middle of a tour with Jesus and Mary Chain. She was rapidly replaced by vocalist Hope Sandoval, small of stature, great of beauty and voice, heads and ears were turning. After finishing the tour under the Opal name, 1988 found Roback deciding a fresh start was called for, and Mazzy Star were officially born.
